The surname Schultheiss comes from medieval High German, meaning the head of a municipality (Like today’s office of Mayor) a Vogt or an executive official of the ruler. As a villicus, it was his duty to assign the village and county taxes and any services due the ruler.
Johann Nickolas Schultheiss the first Schultheiss to come to America in our line, was a footman for Queen Victoria . He was discharged from the German Army in 1854 and came to America by sailboat the same year. Johann was born August 9, 1798 in Bucham Forst, Oberfranken, Bayern. And married Anna Barbara Maar born October 18, 1801 in Gub Forest, Sachsen Coburg-Gotha. They died in Cohocton NY .
